Writers Block – How To Get From A Title To A Full Lyric

A member of the Songwriting Magic Facebook group posted that she had came up with a song title but was really struggling to get any further. This was my reply.

Connect your phrase to what is going on in your life or what has happened in your life. Write that story down. Don’t try to write lyrics at this point. Just keep writing about your, ‘falling apart’ episode. Keep writing until you are writing things down that are no longer obvious, i.e. things that you will only remember or think about when you are warmed up to the process of writing. In particular try to focus on your feelings and emotions.

When you have ran out of things to write down, fashion it into a structure that, at some level, forms a story.

Now start writing your lyrics. You should now have plenty of material for your song.
